Parakeet Workshop

I designed the Parakeet workshop based on my first children’s book ‘The City of Green Birds’ which you can view here

This workshop allows the children to step into the shoes of an illustrator for the day, where they will learn about how I made the images in the book, where the inspiration came from and how they can use their imagination and curiosity to rewrite the story with their creative voices.

They will go from working independently on their own parakeet character to working in groups where they will design a home for their parakeets to live in.

Skills the children will develop:

  • Team work

  • creative expression

  • Imagination

  • Geography & culture

Reception and Year 1 had an exciting visit from author and Illustrator - Lauren Sharples. The children created a beautiful tree, filled with collaged and painted leaves, along with some of the main characters from the book, The Parakeets of Amsterdam. This is proudly on display in the main entrance for visitors to see. Overall, we all had a super day and the work produced was brilliant!

Reading and learning

Starting with story time and learning abit about Amsterdam, where the story is set.

Designing Characters

The children are encouraged to use any materials and colours and patterns they like, to really find their own creative voice and to be expressive!

Designing storyworld’s

Working in teams to design worlds for their parakeets to live in. How will their individual creative ideas comem together as one? I have seen windmills, castles and pokemon worlds combined into one as the children have learned to compromise and adapt their ideas to make room for others input. (shown in image 3)
